Irish Surfing is delighted to announce that the Irish Surfing Intervarsities 2018 will take place in Portrush, Co Antrim on the 3/4 March in association with Ulster University Surf Club. Six titles will be awarded in Men's Surf, Women's Surf, Bodyboard, Longboard and SUP along with the coveted overall club title. The Novice Cup will be hosted, for newcomers to surfing, taking on a more fun format with awards for best costume, wipeout, and a range of manouvers. The event is open to any student studying at a university, IT and other third level colleges on the island of Ireland and is expected to attract over 150 students from surf clubs representing 15 or more third level colleges. The Irish Surfing Intervarsities has been an annual event on the Irish Surfing calendar since the late nineties.
Ulster University Surf is one of our most popular clubs on our Coleraine campus due to its proximity to renowned beaches, and its recognition as an active recreation club. The club competes in the Irish Surf Intervarsities, with alumni having secured Intervarsity titles in previous years. Ulster University last hosted the Championships in 2011.
The club’s chairperson is Cathal Donnelly, Cathal is from Warrenpoint, county Down and moved up to Portrush 2 years ago where he is the head coach and surf school manager for The Surf Project. Cathal is currently studying environmental and marine science at Ulster University Coleraine and he and his team are keen to show the best of what the north coast has on offer.
