The 50th Anniversary Celebration of the first Irish National Surfing Championships will take place
on the 16th and 17th of September 2017 in Tramore, Co Waterford, hosted by Tbay Surf Club. The weekend will include the 2017 Irish National Surfing Championships and a Surfers Ball to celebrate the occasion.
The first Irish National Surfing Championships were held in Tramore in 1967 following the establishment of the Surf Club Of Ireland in 1966. The Surf Club of Ireland, which later became Irish Surfing, the National Governing Body of Surfing today, was formed following a chain of events initiated by Bray man, Kevin Cavey. Kevin discovered surfing in 1962 when he saw a picture of a Hawaiian surfer in a Reader’s Digest. This picture was his inspiration for a life-long passion for surfing. For the next few years Kevin experimented with making his own boards, connecting with other surfers and forming the Surf Club Of Ireland.
In 1966, Kevin received an invitation to compete at the World Surfing Championships in San Diego. When he returned from the Championships the club members were excited to hear how the event had gone. Kevin outlined how the contest was run, sowing the seeds for a decision to host the first Irish National Surfing Championships in Tramore in September 1967.
The event was a huge success with Kevin taking the first Irish Title and the event running annually since. Surfers, young and old, are invited to join our 50th Anniversary Celebration.
